Beautiful Breastfeeding

Dagmar’s Momsense is a blog I read and love.  Yesterday, she posted on the topic of Facebook deleting photos of breastfeeding women and “going as far as suspending accounts (as in the case of The Leaky B@@B breastfeeding support group, for example)”.

I am aware that a breastfeeding woman makes some people uncomfortable in a public setting.  In fact, I was always painfully aware of that, which is why I used to be embarrassed to breastfeed in public, even with a cover.  I also REALLY covered up when I was breastfeeding in my own house.  That is just silly.

I am also not someone who thinks everyone has to breastfeed and a woman is a failure if she does not or cannot do so.  I have made it through periods of doubt in my breastfeeding tenure (a whopping 17 months :P ).  I simply believe that breastfeeding a baby is both natural and beautiful, and there is no reason why it should make someone uncomfortable.  ESPECIALLY, when it is being done discretely, which has usually been the case in my experience.  AND as Dagmar pointed out, even if it is not being done as discretely as you might like, you can always make the choice not to look.

So, I have decided to participate in her campaign to show Facebook that breastfeeding *is* BEAUTIFUL!

It’s definitely a beautiful and natural thing. My goodness they’d delete that but not those explicitly displayed photographs that borderline being porn…strange strange people.

  3. I’m so happy to have found your blog through Dagmar’s great post. I’m another mama who supports mamas and babies. I’m also a breastfeeder and hope it can be normalized while empowering all mamas to parent their children the best they can.

Beautiful post! I can’t stand the looks I would get feeding in public (and believe me, I was VERY covered up). It’s worse now, since he is still feeding, and in this country, if your kid is over a year, people seem to think you are crazy if you breastfeed.

I saw someone in a Facebook post the other day complain about a mom sitting behind her at a baseball game who was *gasp* breastfeeding her baby. It took all the control I had to inform the person that they were showing off more in their cleavage baring top then she was with her nursing cover. :)

    • Ugh! I remember there was a story on the news last year about a woman who was asked to go nurse in the bathroom at a baseball game. I couldn’t believe that! Who wants to eat, nonetheless feed their baby in the disgusting public bathroom! Not to mention the fact that she was completely covered up! I find people’s refusal to accept breastfeeding as beautiful and natural in this country VERY frustrating!

Hey there! This is my 1st comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and say I really enjoy reading your posts. Can you recommend any other blogs/websites/forums that go over the same subjects? Thanks!

    • Hi Sarah! Thanks for the comment! I’m sorry for the delayed response. There are so many. Some of my other favorite natural parenting blogs are Code Name: Mama, I Thought I Knew Mama, Hobo Mama, and Mama Eve. Another blog that I love, which is written by a natural mom but she doesn’t limit herself to just that topic, is A Day Without Sushi. I’m also putting together a section of blog/website references soon!
