Dagmar’s Momsense is a blog I read and love. Yesterday, she posted on the topic of Facebook deleting photos of breastfeeding women and “going as far as suspending accounts (as in the case of The Leaky B@@B breastfeeding support group, for example)”.
I am aware that a breastfeeding woman makes some people uncomfortable in a public setting. In fact, I was always painfully aware of that, which is why I used to be embarrassed to breastfeed in public, even with a cover. I also REALLY covered up when I was breastfeeding in my own house. That is just silly.
I am also not someone who thinks everyone has to breastfeed and a woman is a failure if she does not or cannot do so. I have made it through periods of doubt in my breastfeeding tenure (a whopping 17 months ). I simply believe that breastfeeding a baby is both natural and beautiful, and there is no reason why it should make someone uncomfortable. ESPECIALLY, when it is being done discretely, which has usually been the case in my experience. AND as Dagmar pointed out, even if it is not being done as discretely as you might like, you can always make the choice not to look.
So, I have decided to participate in her campaign to show Facebook that breastfeeding *is* BEAUTIFUL!
