Last night, as I watched American Idol ®, I started thinking about a girl I “knew” in middle school, L. Ok, I’ll admit it: I didn’t actually KNOW her. She was just the most popular girl in our class and I
, the quiet girl in the corner who was too chicken to open her mouth, wanted her to be my best friend know I was alive.
Judging by the show Glee (which, of course, is realistic… duh!), my middle school was somewhat unusual (middle school/high school: close enough!). The most popular girl was not only pretty, but the star athlete AND the lead soloist in every school concert. So, as I have watched Idol over the years, part of me has expected to see L (though, not anymore because we are too old for that now ).
Side note: Can you believe that Lauren Alaina was SIX years old when she first watched Idol?
L was AMAZINGLY TALENTED. Freshman year, when I joined choir, we each had to go up to the piano, in the front of the room, and sing for the instructor, in pairs, so she could make sure we were in the correct section (i.e. soprano or alto). These little mini auditions had gone on for about thirty minutes when the time came for L to go, so the room was buzzing with the conversations of at least twenty five (probably closer to fifty) girls. She COMPLETELY silenced the room in about two seconds. I lost track of her after freshman year of high school, but I still think about her occasionally and wonder if she was fully aware of the caliber of talent she possessed because, as they say on Idol, she “had IT”.
I guess, when I watch Idol and think about how young some of the contestants are, I can’t help but think back to the talented people I knew when I was that young. What about you? Is there anyone you think of when you watch Idol? And, either way, is there someone in particular you are rooting for now? Haley is my favorite. I think she has an amazing voice and I just love her personality on stage!
